Frequently Asked Questions: Troubleshooting

Where can I research issues other users have with MS-Project?

We use the Microsoft Discussion Groups.

Microsoft Discussion Groups - Microsoft Project General

Project Evaluation, task update forms will not display

If your log file contains:

Component MSFLXGRD.OCX or one of its dependencies not correctly registered

Then download and register MSFLXGRD.OCX here

I am getting the error message can not Change Mode.

If there are outline tasks, and the Tools> Options> View tab, Show Summary Tasks is unchecked, the operations Go To Planning, Single Task Update and Refresh single project models will fail. This was corrected in version 3.0.0.6 and later.

I can not get The Looking Glass™ Reports to work. What is wrong?

1) Ensure you have followed the steps in the help, "Creating a Datasource". Make sure your datasource is not Read Only.

2) Make sure you have followed the steps in the help "Storing Data Points for The Looking Glass™".

You will get an error message similar to this, if you have not saved LG data. [Microsoft]{ODBC Excel Driver] the Microsoft Jet database engine could not find the object LookingGlassData.

3) Your database must not be open in memory at the time you try to use The Looking Glass™ features. For example, if you are using an Excel datasource, quit from Excel before storing data points or creating The Looking Glass™ report.

4) Excel 2000 or newer is required.

I keep on changing the Project Name for each update. How can I generate a trend chart of Protection ratio?

The Looking Glass matches the project in memory, to the records in the Looking Glass Datasource, using the ProjectGUID. This is the Global Unique Identifier.

The ProjectGuid may be viewed in MS-Project with your project file open, under File > Properties > Custom Tab, and scroll down to see the ProjectGUID, Screen shot attached.

This is matched to the first column in your Looking Glass Datasource.

The ProjectGUID is created the first time you store the Looking Glass Data for that project. When you save the Project file, the ProjectGuid is stored.

Once a project file has a ProjectGUID associated with it, if you select "Save As", you will be prompted whether you want to create a new ProjectGuid, or keep the old one. This is how we enable you to save the project file under different names, and still associate the project file with the same set of history records.

So if you are having trouble generating the trend chart, follow these rules:

1) Always save the project file after you save the Looking Glass Data for the first time for that project (This saves the ProjectGUID).

2) If you change the project name at each update, when you select "Save As", you will be prompted

"Is this a new project which will require a different set of Looking Glass Data Points?".

Always select "No".

I cannot install cc-Pulse (or cc-MPulse). What could be wrong?

1. Make sure you have administrative rights on the computer. To check, right click on the start menu. If the options include "Explore All Users", you have administrative rights.
2. Ensure you have MS-Project 2000 or newer.
3. Ensure you have English, German, Polish, or Portuguese version of MS-Project. If you have non-English OS in one of these languages and English MS-Project, special steps are needed.
4. Ensure you have not tried to install both the cc-Pulse and the cc-MPulse setup. You may only install one or the other. The cc-MPulse setup contains a complete copy of cc-Pulse.
5. Anti-virus may interfere with the installation. Un-install, turn off any anti-virus, and re-install.

When I attempt to install, I get a blue screen.

A blue screen during installation has correlated with attempting to install without administrative rights on one system.

I cannot open the Project Control Center, or Apply Buffers. Also my cc-Pulse views are not there.
This is symptomatic of a failed installation. Possible causes: 1) Lack of Administrative rights on the machine. To check for administrative rights, right click on the Start menu. The bottom entry should read "Explore All Users".

2) Anti-virus. We have seen three occasions where anti-virus software prevented the complete installation of cc-Pulse or cc-MPulse, leading to the above symptoms. To rectify, un-install, turn off any anti-virus, and re-install the Looking Glass software. Additional symptoms of the failed installation include failure to switch to tracking mode, and the following entry in the cc-Pulse log file:
"DTPicker: ID=35773 - A date was specified that does not fall within the MinDate and MaxDate properties. : Conf=Error"

This problem may also be solved by updating the registry with a file. Contact Support for this file.

When I start MS-Project, I get the message "Cannot install cc-Pulse objects. Add-in may work incorrectly."

Your Global.mpt is missing the necessary cc-Pulse elements.

The needed views, filters, tables, and toolbars are in a file called “PulseInstall2000.mpp”. This may be found in a path similar to:

C:\Program Files\Looking Glass Suite\cc-MPulse 2.6.0.1

To correct, open MS-Project, open the organizer, and copy all the views, tables, filters, and toolbars that start with cc-Pulse or cc-MPulse from PulseInstall200 over to your Global.mpt using the organizer.

Be sure to copy both resource and task filters and tables.

When logged into Project Server, gaps that I cannot explain appear in my schedules.

When connected to Project Server, it is possible for assignments on other projects to affect the schedule. To avoid this:

(1) Have only one project open in memory when you level resources.

(2) Uncheck "Load Summary Resource Assignments" in the Project Server Accounts dialog box when you log in.
This feature was formerly called "Connecting Across A WAN".

Why is MS Project so slow to start?

This may be caused by global.mpt bloat. This bloat can be caused by many uninstall/reinstall cycles of Spherical Angle Products.

To check for this condition, look at the file size of your global.mpt. This is found in a directory similar to the following:
C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name\Application Data\Microsoft\MS Project\11\1033 If your global.mpt is 10,000K (10M) or bigger, you should follow the below procedure.

Alternative 1:
Uninstall your Spherical Angle product.
Rename your global.mpt to "oldGlobal.mpt"
Re-install your Spherical Angle product.
If you have any custom views, tables or filters, copy these from your "oldGlobal.mpt" to your "Global.mpt" using your organizer.

Alternative 2:
Rename your global.mpt to "oldGlobal.mpt"
Launch MS Project. You will get an error message that ends with "Add-in may not work correctly"
Open the file "PulseInstall2000.mpp" from the path "C:\Program Files\Looking Glass Suite\cc-MPulse 1.0.32" (Last directory is the name and current version of your Spherical Angle product)
Using your Organizer, copy all task and resource toolbars, views, tables and filters that have “Pulse” in the name from PulseInstall2000 to your global.mpt.
If you have any custom views, tables or filters, copy these from your "oldGlobal.mpt" to your "Global.mpt" using your organizer.

When I open my .mpp file, I get an error “File Not Found".

The .mpp file is probably damaged. Depending on your version of Project, you can recover the file by saving and re-opening in XML, MPD, or .MPX.

Corrupt, Corrupted

Why is MS-Project slow with cc-Pulse installed?
McAfee Host Intrusion Prevention is known to cause performance to degrade about 800x. Try turning HIP off.

Why are my buffers moving?

You may have autocalculate turned back on. To turn it off, go to tools...options...calculation tab and set calculation to manual.

I am trying to change a Start No Earlier Than to a later date, but it keeps reverting to the day after the status date after updating tasks or updating buffers.
The system has a flag that indicates any user-imposed constraints, Task.flag14

This flag is set to "Yes" when cc-Pulse imposes a constraint. The system will not change any constraints with task.flag14 set to "no".

Please check this flag and ensure it is set to "no" for the tasks on which you are imposing constraints.

I cannot hear the audio on the .AVI demonstration files.

The cc-Pulse videos are encoded with the PCM codec.

The cc-MPulse videos are encoded with Windows Media Audio v2.

You can check what codecs are on your machine as following:

Windows XP

Click the START button and open the control panel.

Click on the "Sounds and Audio Devices Properties" icon.

Click on the Hardware tab, and highlight (click on) AUDIO CODECS.

Click the Properties button, and then select the PROPERTIES TAB to view your installed codecs.

Double click a codec to see its corresponding properties. If a particular codec has any options that can be customized, you will see these options when you double click the codec name.

At this time, you can install Windows Media Audio v2 codec by running program "uc_ms-mpeg4_pack.exe" from this web site: http://www.undercut.org/download/

I am having trouble with the Resource Pool Feature.

Be very careful with pools, NEVER:
over-write linked files
move linked files
delete a linked file without having the pool open and then save BOTH the pool and the file. Information about the link is saved in the linked files AND the pool and if the information is not changed in both at the same time, corruption happens sooner or later.
For example, to take a project away on a laptop then return with an updated schedule you should:
Open the project
Open the resource pool in write mode
Select Tools, Resource Sharing, Share Resources Select use own resources
Save BOTH files
Take project away
On return open the pool in write mode
Open the project
Share resources
Save BOTH files

Why do the background colors for my reports not print?

This is usually a web browser setting. If the Print Preview does not show background colors, the browser settings are the most likely culprit.

Here is a page that shows how to change the settings.

Setting Changes for Internet Explorer 5
Under Internet Options", select the "Advanced" tab. In the window of options, locate the "Printing" section. Check the box entitled "Print background colors and image".

I cannot get the cc-MPulse "Synchronize Resources" to update my drum resource calendar into the Enterprise Portfolio

cc-MPulse 2.5.0.3 and later have an update to the Synchronize Resource function to enable changed working times in the resource pool to synchronize into the Enterprise Portfolio.

When I try to Level Resources, I get the message "cc-(M)Pulse Cannot Level Resources. What is wrong?

It could be that cc-Pulse is attempting to write to a custom field that is not available. Check cc-Pulse > Options > MSP Variables, and ensure that each number field used in that screen is not designated as a formula field in your project.
